Beyond Borders Exhibition, RIBA, London
Bricks are universal, made to fit the human hand; they show how similar we all are. Used all over the world, from the cheapest dwellings to the most expensive residences. They create walls and borders, of safety but also of exclusion.
The proposal consists of two translucent acrylic frames on which handmade bricks are placed. The bricks are to be designed and made by local schools. Special attention will be paid to the frog of the brick, which can be highly personalised. Each brick is a seen as a small artwork itself or an architectural model.
Visitors are asked to take a brick away with them from the wall. The bricks will be placed frog down so that the visitor is surprised by the unique design.
Over the duration of the installation the walls will become increasingly more perforate as the visitors take the bricks away.
Once all of the bricks have gone just two translucent crystalline structures will remain. These structures are to remind us that there will always be differences; however, we must view them as things of beauty rather than using them to divide.
