The Listening Room, British Pavilion, Venice, 2023

“Environmental justice is the intersection of both social justice and environmentalism, where the inequity in environmental degradation is also considered.” - Leah Thomas

The Listening Room seeks to explore the links between climate justice and social justice through a distinctly British architectural lens and asks; how might we listen - as a means to moving forward?

Comprised of a series of listening rooms, the pavilion will present voices from communities across the United Kingdom that exist at the intersection of social and environmental inequality. Today, poor air quality is considered the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK, and the areas that are the most polluted are also the most socially deprived. Harnessing the spirit of regeneration, the voices will be outlining their visions of brighter cleaner futures for their neighbourhoods.
